Salmon Netting The North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society had been largely unsuccessful in its efforts to net salmon for the market, it was reported at the monthly meeting of the society last night. “Three salmon were netted in the Waimakariri river and only one in the Ashley river,” a member of the fish committee of the society reported. Chains Needed Motorists using Arthur’s Pass, Porters Pass and Lewis Pass are advised to carry chains because of snow. Yesterday two inches of snow fell between Lake Lyndon and the top of Porters Pass, and there was a heavy fall about 3 p.m. along the road from Arthur’s Pass township to the summit. A heavy fall of snow was expected last night or early this morning. Lottery Win To N.Z. A Melbourne lottery draw on May 13 was lucky for a New Zealand ticket-holder. The first prize of £lO.OOO went to “Snorer,” of Hamilton (ticket No. 53477). Melbourne, May 13. Defects In Rail-Cars Another rail-car —the fourth in two days—broke down in the Auckland district yesterday. “We are having a real run of bad luck,” said the chief mechanical engineer at Auckland (Mr W. Watt). The rail-car was travelling from Auckland to Okaihau and developed mechanic?! trouble at Whangarei station. On Tuesday, two rail-cars on the same run broke down. The other railcar was on the Auckland-Rotorua run.—(P.A.) No Waiting Drivers renewing their licences at the traffic department counter of the Christchurch City Council yesterday had no waiting. They were taking advantage of the department’s advance renewing of licences for the next licensing period and staff was ready to attend to them. The council’s traffic superintendent (Mr G. P. Kellar) said yesterday he was pleased to see so many motorists renewing their licences early. “It means that they will not have to wait in queues at the last minute,’’ he said. Telephone Listings A decision to have Presbyterian churches’ telephone numbers listed under “Presbyterian Churches” in the next telephone directory instead of “Manses, Presbyterian,” in the present directory was made at a meeting of the Presbytery of Christchurch last evening. It was also decided to investigate the possibility of having districts included alongside the names of the churches. Less Lolly The popularity of what the Abstract of Statistics describes as “the comparatively new novelty” in the ice-cream industry—the iced lolly—apparently declined sharply in 1957-58. Production of iced lollies in 1956-57 reached a record level of 565,000 gallons, but there was a drop of more than 16 per cent, in 1957-58 and production was 473,000 gallons. There was a drop of 2.6 per cent, in ice-cream production from 4,238,000 gallons to 4,129,000 gallons. The value of production in the ice-cream industry also dropped from £2,162.000 to £2,012,000. Wine Production More wine is being produced and sold in New Zealand, and less is being imported, according to the latest issue of the Abstract of Statistics. In the year 195758 the quantity of new wine put down was 640.000 gallons compared with 520,000 gallons in the previous- year. Of this quantity 530,000 gallons were dessert wines and 110,000 gallons were table wines. Sales were 519,000 gallons compared with 454,000 gallons in 1956-57. The import of wines for the calendar year 1958 was 149.000 gallons compared with 275,000 gallons in 1957. Bricks And Blocks Nearly 7,000,000 concrete flocks and more than 49,000,000 bricks were produced in New Zealand in 1957-58. The latest issue of the Abstract of Statistics says that with the exception of roofing tiles and timber the output of most building materials, was higher than in 1956-57. Cement production increased from 472,100 tons to 544,000 tons. The number of bricks was 49,300,000 compared with 43,800,000 the previous year, and concrete block production increased from 5,700,000 to 6,700,000.
