GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS

New Structures For Wellington

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 7.

Plans for additional Government buildings in Wellington were announced today by the Minister of Works (Mr Watt).

Tenders will be called towardj the end of the year for a new five-storey building on the corner of Mulgrave street and Thorndon quay to house the Government printing office. The existing printing office building in Lambton quay will be demolished and the site may be used for another Government building—possibly as headquarters for the National Airways Corporation. Mr Watt said that, alternatively, N.A.C. would be offered space in Bunny street next to the Hotel Waterloo. He said the decision for a new printing office building carried a stage further the development of the proposed Government Centre in Wellington. This began with the letting of a contract for a Government office block being built in Bowen street. The Government will also call tenders for Broadcasting House in Bowen street when more progress has been made on the office block on the site.. Mr Watt said the Government was considering using the Bowen street office block plans for a new departmental building in Aitken street.
