PHOTOGRAPHER TO PRINCE PHILIP
Former German Army
Private
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)
LONDON, May 5. The “unofficial photographer’’ who has accompanied Prince Philip on two Overseas tours was a former German Army private who did not know why he was chosen for the job, according to the “Daily Sketch.’* The newspaper said 36-year-old Dr. Wolfgang Breitling, whose presence aboard the Royal yacht Britannia was not revealed until the Duke’s Pacific tour ended last week, had been staying with friends in outer London.
Dr. Breitling—a doctor of languages and a bachelor—said he had known Prince Philip since he was five, and they had been at school together at Gordonstoun, in Scotland.
According to the “Daily Sketch,’’ Dr. Breitling said that while the official photographers were busy with the Duke and the guard of honour, he was busy photographing landscapes and people. “Poor Prince Philip,” he said. “His time is so taken up with ceremonial that he has no time to capture the scenery on film. So I do it for him.
“I’m a lousy photographer really,” he said. “Two out of three of my pictures weren’t much good, but the copyright belongs to Prince Philip, and I’ve handed all my material to Commander Richard Colville, the Royal press secretary.’’
