IDENTIFICATON OF WHARVES
Names Instead Of
Numbers Urged
With the exception of Gladstone pier, all Lyttelton wharves are designated by numbers. The chairman (Mr W. P. Glue) yesterday asked the Harbour Board to give consideration to naming wharves, which was the practice in other ports and, as a beginning, he suggested that No. 2 wharf be named the inter-island wharf.
Mr J. Brand said he favoured the naming of the inter-island wharf but the naming of other wharves should begin on the quay of the eastern extension. “Even if you name them, the wharves will still be known by numbers,” said Mr W. B. Laing. The question of naming wharves was referred to the works committee.
