“Assistance In Wide Field”

(New Zealand Press Association! WELLINGTON, April 13. “Looking at the amount of assistance in a wide field of goods, I would say they have done a fairly good job,” said the secretary of the United Kingdom Manufacturers’ and New Zealand Representatives’ Association (Mr A. E. Tarrant) commenting today on the new import schedule. He said most of the items seriously concerning the association had been referred to in the schedule. A fairly wide range of products had been eased, particularly in manufacturers’ lines, and a substantial effort had been made to assist in a difficult situation.

Mr Tarrant said it must be assumed, from the Minister's reference to existing licences, that excess licences would be deducted from the new schedules. This could reduce the value of the increases.

With crockery, for example, an increase from 100 per cent, to 125 per cent, of the 1958 basic would probably make no practical difference to the total this year, he said.

Fast Fishing Trawlers For Russia.— Construction has begun in Leningrad shipyards of fast fishing trawlers specially designed for use in the Central and South Atlantic, the Soviet News Agency. Tass. reported. The ships have a displacement of 2200 tons and are powered by two 650 horsepower diesels. They can sail without refuelling for two months.—Reuter.
