Extensive Damage To Newsprint

(New Zeaiana Press Association* WELLINGTON, April 12. Damage amounting to several thousands of pounds occurred in Newtown today when rainwater cascaded from a smashed stormwater drain, flooding the Newtown Bowling Club's greens to a depth of four feet and causing extensive damage to the contents of the paper stores owned by Wellington’s morning newspaper, the “Dominion.” A large number of rolls of newsprint stacked in the paper stores were soaked when the water rose as high as nine inches in one store and four inches in another. Many of the bottom rolls swelled and burst. “There is no, estimate yet of the tonnage of newsprint ruined.” said a spokesman for the “Dominion” tonight “But the loss is certain to be extensive.” City council workmen rushed to the scene soon after the flooding began, and opened two large manholes to let the water escape A £230 motor mower and a piano in the Newtown Bowline Club’s rooms were among the articles seriously damaged.

The weather in Mid-Canterbury was mainly fine yesterday, although there were brief showers. Rangiora had a fine day yesterday, but a light drizzle started about 7 p.m. Oxford had heavy rain early yesterday morning, .35in being recorded by 9 a.m. Some heavy showers fell during the afternoon, and light rain was falling last evening. Even heavier falls have been experienced on the plains inland from Christchurch. Daily readings at Darfield have been: Thursday, 2.10 in; Friday, 3.14 in; Saturday, 1.17 in; yesterday, 1.77 in. Overnight readings taken at Mount Torlesse Station, Springfield, were: Thursday, 1.75 in; Friday, 3.80 in; Saturday, .94in. About .80in of rain fell at the station yesterday.
