HEAVY RAIN IN CITY

Some Flooding At Dallington

The intersection of Gayhurst and Mcßratney’s roads. Dallington, and two comer properties were flooded yesterday when drains at this point failed to cope with the heavy rain which fell in Christchurch early yesterday morning. The flooding was caused by backing up in the drains when the Avon river rose at high tide. Half an inch of rain fell in the city yesterday before 9 a.m. The properties which suffered most were those of Mr V. C. Fargher, of 127 'layhurst road, and Mr M. Tindall, of 48 Mcßratneys road.

Mr Tindall woke yesterday morning to find his house surrounded by water. Floor boards in his garage were afloat, and the water was lapping quietly at the first of the steps to the back entrance of the house. Barrow loads of soil, shingle and boxes of soil were used to build a retaining wall across his drive at the entrance, and these efforts were successful in keeping the water out.

The sight of water entering the double doors of his garage and flowing out the single door in the rear greeted Mr Fargher when he woke. His drive and his back garden were also flooded and outside his property. The road and footpath outside his house was flooded for about 50yds. Water also lapped the footpath outside a block of shops on the other comer.
