Personal Items Vice-Regal

The Governor-General (Lord Cobham) and Lady Cobham have left Wellington on an official visit to Gisborne. They will resume residence at Government House, Auckland, on Monday.—(P.A.) The British Minister of Defence (Mr Duncan Sandys) will fly direct from Wellington to Ashburton tomorrow to revisit his pioneer grandfather’s property at “Springfield,” near Methven. Mr Sandys will motor from Ashburton to Methven and travel to Christchurch on Saturday night. He is expected to make a sightseeing flight over parts of the South Island on Sunday, leaving later in the day by Hastings aircraft on his return to the United Kingdom by way of Australia. Mr Sandys is expected to be in London on Tuesday. The Minister of Education (Mr Skoglund) will open the new gymnasium at the Christchurch Boys’ High School on June 3. This information was received at a meeting of the school’s board of governors yesterday. Mr Justice Boys, who underwent an operation in a private hospital in Auckland last Monday is reported to be making reasonably good progress.—(P.A.) The resignation of Mr J. Dugdale from the staff of the Christchurch Boys’ High School was received at a meeting of the board of governors of the school yesterday. A member of the teaching staff at the school since 1952, Mr Dugdale is to go to the Christchurch Teachers’ College. Mr Geoffrey N. A. Murrant has been elected a director of the Shaw Savill and Albion Company, according to cabled advice received from London today by Mr F. D. Harris, general manager in New Zealand of the company.— (P.A.)

Mr W. E. Bate, of Hastings, has been re-elected president for the next two years of the Hospital Boards’ Association of New Zealand. Vice-presidents re-elected at the annual conference were Dr. L. C. L. Averill, of Christchurch; Mr J. Grierson, of Auckland; and Mr P. C. Stainton, of New Plymouth. Executive members for the North Island are Messrs G. Smith (Huntly), J. F. Thompson (Greytown) and R. G. J. Tregurtha (Wanganui). For the South Island the members are Dr. J. Fulton (Dunedin), and Mr R. Oakley (Ashburton).—(P.A.)

Mr D. Mackay was re-elected chairman of the Cashmere High School board of governors at its meeting last evening. Dr. A. Crowther was elected deputychairman.
