TRUCK DRIVER KILLED

Vehicle Plunges Into Washout

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 9.

A father of six children was killed instantly this morning when his laden timber truck plunged into a 12ft deep crevasse caused by a washout on the main Tau-ranga-Cambridge highway between Hinuera and Te Poi. He was Cliff Hocking, aged 34, of Clothiers road, Putaruru.

Thirty workers with a crane managed to free the body at noon. It was trapped in the cab by timber which smashed through from the back. ‘ The washout, 12ft deep and 40ft long, has closed the heavily-used road completely. All traffic is being diverted through Matamata. At the spot where the tragedy occurred there was a culvert used to carry water from .a nearby hill under the road. The culvert is believed to have burst during the night after heavy rain. Five inches of rain fell in the area between 7 p.m. yesterday and 7 a.m. today.
