Opposition By Pensioners

(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, April 8.

A meeting of about 800 people, mainly pensioners, in Melbourne Town Hall last night, adopted a resolution condemning any increase in salaries, allowances and pensions for Federal members of Parliament. The resolution called on all politica] parties to reject the Richardson report and to grant the “justifiable claim” of aged, invalid and widow pensioners to at least half the basic wage. The Victorian assembly of the Australian Commonwealth Pensioners’ Federation organised the meeting. The president of the assembly (Miss M. Nunan) told the meeting that the federation would seek legal advice on challenging the right of Parliamentarians to vote themselves pay increases.
