BANKRUPTCY OF LABOURER
111-Health Blamed For Position
(From Our Own Reporter) HOKITIKA, March 9.
Successive periods of ill health, with spells in hospital, and sickness among his children, were the reasons given by Arthur Vince, a labourer, of Glentunnel (formerly of Ross) for his bankruptcy when he was examined in the Hokitika Court today. In a statement read by Mr P. D. Clancy, Acting Official Assignee, of Christchurch, Vince said he had spent one period, of nine months out of 12, in hospital. There were six children all of school age at the time the debts were incurred. Four of the children had been under the care of a doctor. Mr Clancy said there were 24 creditors, and liabilities totalling £205 18s 6d. Assets were nil. The majority of debts were for food and clothing, and most of them had been incurred while Vince was at Ross. Vince told Mr Clancy that he was at present working at Glentunnel and, with overtime, was earning £l5 a week. He said that if his health permitted he would be able to pay off £5 per week until his debt'.t were met in full. He added that he had no life insurance, and had only 4s 5d in a bank account.
In closing the meeting, Mr Clancy said that the position was that Vince had made a substantial offer. “We cannot take the matter any further, and all we can do is accept his offer,” said Mr Clancy.
