Women’s Softball N.Z. INTER-CLUB TOURNEY

Monowai Only Team Unbeaten “The Press” Special Service WANGANUI, March 3. At the end of the second day’s play in the New Zealand inter-club women’s softball tournament Monowai (Christchurch) was the only unbeaten team. United (Wanganui) and Samoan Society (Auckland) have three wins, and Y.W.C.A. (Hutt Valley) and Richmond (Auckland) have one win. Hagley (Christchurch) has not yet won. Monowai recorded its second shutout win By beating the strong United team b y three runs. The brilliant pitching of B. Makinson was again backed up by excellent fielding, and only three United batters made first safety. B. Makinson gained 12 strikeouts and did not concede a walk, giving up two hits. J. Innes hit a two-base hit. and J. Hobbs batted the possible. In its later game, Monowai had its third shut-out win, beating Y.W.C.A. by 14 runs. Monowai was held scoreless in its first four innings, but good batting, including a three-base hit by N. Beale, brought in six runs in its fifth. Four more runs came in its next innings, and another four in its last. L. Penney fitting a good two-base hit. In a very tight game, Hagley was unlucky not to win its game with Y.W.C.A., which won by one run. A. Bryce took a good catch to dismiss V. Larkin and then threw to J. Gaskell for her to tag out the runner. L. Honeyman pitched well for Hagley and was well assisted by the catcher. P. Timms, who also batted well.

In its later game, Samoan Society was well held by Hagley and could score only one run in its first five innings because of good pitching by Honeyman and good fielding. Samoan Society batted well in its sixth in* nings to score six runs, but was held scoreless in its last. Although Hagley had a number* of runners on bases it was unable to score. Honeyman pitched well for Hagley, and as in the earlier game Bryce, C. Mullally. Tlmma, and D. Bougen played walL
