Two-tooths Sell To 80s At Little River Fair

Romney two-tooth ewes made no fabulous prices at the Little River ewe fair yesterday. Rather it was a solid sale at fully up to the good rates established at the recent Romney fair at Tinwald. For older ewes, however, the sale was erratic with a few good pens of serviceable sheep selling at rates slightly better than current Addington values, but for medium and inferior sorts values tended to be a little under current market rates.

Though Banks Peninsula has been going through one of the worst droughts in memory the young Romney ewes sent to the fair were a remarkably good even lot, and at the lower price levels ruling this season they sold steadily under competition from as far away as the West Coast. Peninsula farmers had to become accustomed to a new set of values for their sheep yesterday and in the main they were prepared to meet the market. At last year’s buoyant sale few pens of two-tooths sold at under £5. No fewer than 65 pens exceeded the £5 mark and five times pens went to more than £7 with the fair being topped at the record figure of £ll. It was a very different story yesterday. Top price of the day was 80s, which went to R. T. Masefield (Goughs Bay), who last year was paid up to £ll, and for 24 pens sold yesterday the average price was 55s 7d compared with £5 Os 7d for a selection of comparable sheep sold last year. In the main, however, good sheep brought more than 60s yesterday and this level was exceeded some 40 times with 16 pens making better than 70s. At these rates the market seemed to be much in line with the Ashburton County breeders’ fair at Tinwald, which was looked on as being an extremely good sale under present conditions. Lower Averages R. H. Masefield sold 133 sheep yesterday at an average of 78s, with his second cut bringing 755. Last year for 111 his average was £9. His brother, D. O. Masefield, who averaged £6 17s 6d at the last fair, sold a pen yesterday at 79s—the second best price of the day—and for 110 he had an average of 75s 9d.

Springvale estate (Little River), which again sent forward 300, averaged 66s 2d compared with £6 3s 6d a year ago and among their sheep was a pen of 60 at 78s. Sales at 77s were made by A. R. Hay lock (Onuku) for 62 and also by Mrs Z. M. Partridge (Little River) for 72. One of the biggest individual offerings of the day came forward from Annandale estate (Pigeon Bay). The estate’s 949 two-tooths averaged just under 50s.

Only a sprinkling of good serviceable sheep were included in the offering of older ewes and for these there was a relatively good sale, although again at values little more than half of those ruling a year ago. The only pen of straight four-year-olds offered fetched 41s for W. S. L. Mcßae (Forsythe) and* in a fairly sizeable offering of sheep described as five-year-olds T. E. Armstrong . (Mount. Clair), who last year received up to 71s was paid 48s for 168. A. E. B. Goodwin (Brookshaw) sold a truck lot at 37s and sales at 35s were made by F. Coop (Kaituna) and D. O. Masefield (Goughs Bay).

When, however, it came to the old and plainer ewes of uncertain vintage and worth the market was slack and passings were not infrequent and values were barely up to Addington rates. Still the sale was by no means a fiasco and with some outside support a reasonable offtake was effected. However the average price for some 15 pens of older ewes sold yesterday was only about 40 per cent, of the average for a similar range of sheep offered last year—about 23s compared with 58s a year ago. At last year’s fair four-year-old ewes brought up to 83s and five-year-olds to 725. Yesterday the best of the five-year-olds realised from 35s to 48s with good sorts at 28s to 345, average 19s to 26s and others at 7s to 15s.

A line of six and eight-tooth ewes from R. Bruce (Akaroa) brought 51s and a single offering of ewe lambs fetched 20s. The following is a range of values, with figures for last year:— 1959. 1958. s. s. s. s. Two-tooth Ewes—
