N.S.W. Team Has Most Finalists

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. February 27. The dominance of the touring New South Wales team was the feature of the third day’s play In the invitation tennis tournament at Wellington today.

Members of this team will contest all the finals among themselves except the women’s doubles, in which the New Zealand pair, Mrs W. J. Tinnock and Miss M. Johnston, will be contestants.

The Australian women’s singles champion, Mrs M. Reitano, was forced to withdraw because of influenza. M. Mulligan, of New South Wales, lost the first set to L. A. Gerrard, of Auckland, 5-7, but from then was the only player in it. Gerrard was outclassed in the next three sets, all played in windy conditions. Miss J. Lehane’s great forehand pace was too much for th’e New Zealand women’s singles champion, Miss R. Morrison. Results were:— Men’s Singles. M. Mulligan (N.S.W.) beat L. A. Gerrard (Auckland), 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1; R. Hewitt (N.S.W.) beat F. Stolle (N.S.W.), 6-2. 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Women’s Singles.—Miss J. Lehane (N.S.W.) beat Miss R. Morrison (Auckland), 6-2. 2-6, 6-1; Miss N. Turner (N.S.W.) beat Mrs M. Reitano (N.S.W.) by default. Men’s Doubles. Mulligan and Hewitt beat J. A. Barry and J. R. McDonald (Wellington), 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, 2-6. 6-3; G. Pares (N.S.W.) and Stolle beat Gerrard and R. S. McKenzie (Wellington), 6-4, 6-3, 6-1. Women’s Doubles.—Misses Lehane and B. Holstein (N.S.W.) beat Misses S. Cox (Wellington) and Morrison, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4; Miss M. Johnston (Wellington) and Mrs J. Tinnock (Auckland) beat Mrs Reitano and Miss Turner by default. Mixed Doubles.—Mulligan and Miss Lehane heat Gerrard and Miss Morrison, 6-3, 6-4; Hewitt and Miss Holstein beat McKenzie and Mrs Tinnock, 6-1, 6-2.

Sedgman Beats Trabert

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 27. A New Zealand tour by four professional tennis players, the Australians. F. A. Sedgman, K. R. Rosewall and M. G. Rose. and the American, T. A. Trabert, began at Auckland today. Results F. A. Sedgman beat T. A. Trabert. 6-3, 0-6, 6-3. K. R. Rosewall beat M. R. Rose, 4-6, 7-5. 6-2. Sedgman and Trabert beat Rosewall and Rose, 5-7. 7-5, 8-6.
