Tour Of Diocese Of Christchurch

The Bishop of Aotearoa (the Rt. Rev. W. N. Panapa) will visit Christchurch on March 14, to attend the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Te Wai Pounamu Maori Girls’ College. If transport can be arranged he will also visit the Chatham Islands.

The Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) has arranged for Bishop Panapa and Canon Wi Hiiata, who will arrive today, to cover the entire Diocese of Christchurch, which embraces Canterbury and Westland. On March 14, Bishop Panapa will attend the founder’s day ceremony at Te Wai Pounamu College where the warden (Bishop Warren) will welcome visitors including the Minister of Forests (Mr Tirikatene) and Mr T. Fletcher, a former inspector of Maori schools.

On March 15, Bishop Panapa will celebrate Communion at Phillipstown Church at 8 a.m. He will preach at the jubilee service in the Christchurch Cathedral at 11 a.m. A luncheon will be held at Ohoka, where the Rev. C. A. Fraer started Te Wai Pounamu College. At 5 p.m. there .will be a gathering at the Tuahiwi Pa and Bishop Panapa will preach at a service in Tuahiwi Church at 7 p.m. Canon Huata earned a fine reputation as chaplain to the Maori Battalion in Italy during the last war. He is now well known for his energetic work in the Diocese of Waikato.

During his 14-day visit at the pas at Tuahiwi, Rapaki. Little River, Christchurch, Temuka, Arowhenua, Morven, Taumutu, Kumara, Arahura, Ross, Hari Hari, Whataroa, The Fox, Jacob’s River and Akaroa. .

In Christchurch on Wednesday, March 11, there will be a gathering of Maoris and former members of the Maori Battaltion in St. John’s Hall, Latimer square.
