Youth Beaten By Gang In Auckland City Street

AUCKLAND, February 27. A youth was beaten up by a gang of other youths in front of crowds of shoppers in Hobson street, Auckland, about 9 o’clock tonight. Earlier, in another incident, a King’s College schoolboy was knocked unconscious during a fight with three youths on a school train travelling from Otahuhu to Auckland.

The youth attacked in Hobson street was Lance Dunn, aged 17, of Onehunga. He suffered a severe bruising and some cuts. After treatment at Auckland Hospital, he was able to go home. Dunn had been, at a dance in the Trades Hall. He took exception to remarks made to the girl with whom he was dancing by another youth and went outside to remonstrate.

Hundreds of shoppers saw a group of youths attack him and knock him to the footpath. The gang then fled. Shoppers hailed a passing ambulance which took Dunn to the hospital. Police were quickly at the scene and an arrest has been made. In the train ncdent, the Kng*s College boy was one of a group of students travelling home after school. They boarded the train at Mangere about 4 p.m. The police are looking for three youths who were travelling on the train. They described the youths as bodgies. The boy suffered bruises but no obvious ill-effects, according to his parents.
