PROMISE AND SMART IN GOOD TRIAL AT WINGATUI

DUNEDIN, February 17,

A smart half-mile by the two-year-old Elrick and sound trials by Promise, Smart and Panel were features of the track work at Wingatui this morning.' The trials, were held under ideal conditions, but there was rain later in the morning. The Dunedin Handicap candidate, Elrick (H. T. Anderton), was not at top speed when he broke away, but he covered half a mile on the plough in 52sec. The Kurdistan gelding ran out the distance strongly to come home the last three furlongs in 38 3-ssec. Wondon (A. I. Powell) 'recorded the best half-mile of the morning when he ran the first furlong in 12sec, and came home in 51 2-ssec, but he was not impressive in ms task, and his trainer expressed dissatisfaction with his effort. Wondon was withdrawn from his engagement in the sprint at Gore last week. It was considered that he was not at his best.

Royal Chant (L. W. Hare) ran the first furlong in 13sec, and was assisted over the rest of the distance by his stablemate, Chips (S Dyack). They finished on terms in 53s ec.

That time was equalled by Red Boa (H. T -Anderton), which ran clear of her stablemate. Seadune (E. E. O'Brien).

Allfair (R. J. Skelton) and Madam Curie (A. I. Powell) were not hurried in 54sec. the first furlong in 13 Bonniboy (R. Low) finished on to beat Bonny Star (J. Wells) and Salisbury (B. Blair) in 54sec. the opening furlong in 12 2-ssec. Salisbury is making a fresh start and was not hurried.

King Cassock (E. O’Brien) held a slight advantage from Casslno (R. Low) ahead of Jet Flight (B. E. Kennedy) after five furlongs in Imm 6 4-ssee. The first two furlongs were run in the fast time of 24sec.

. Arabian Chief (R. J. Skelton) worked well over six furlongs in Imin 21 2-ssec. the first three furlongs in ■« 3-ssec. He shaded Bow Tie (B, P. Kennedy) in the run home with Tut Tut (R. Blair), two lengths back. Black Star IR. J. Skelton) finished on to beat Master David (R. Low) in Imin 22 4-ssec, the first three furlongs in 40 2-ssec.

Ark Royal Unhurried Ark Royal (A. I. Powell) was not hurried tn Imin 22sec, the last three furlongs taking 41sec. On the outside of the course proper, Smart (B. E. Kennedy) pulled his way to the front and set the pace with Count Aven (E. E. O’Brien). Promise (R. J. Skelton) ran up to. the leaders going to the turn - and continued his effort to shade Smart, with a length and a half to' Panel (B. P. Kennedy), which came through on the Inside to beat Count Aven. They covered the seven furlongs in Imin Msec, the last half-mile in 53 2-Ssec and the last three furlong, in 40<ee.

i The trestles were 50 feet out on the course proper. Sydtrev (H. T. Anderton) came home wen to shade The Era (R. J. Skelton), Lady Cortauld (H. .J. Powell) and Strath Maris (P. Don’t on) at the end of six furlongs in Imin 22 2-ssec. The first three furlongs were covered in 41sec. Pot Luck (R. L. Low) and Believe Me (B E. Kennedy) ran half a mile down the back in 54sec. Hearth Rug Hearth Rug (B. J.' Anderton) ran half a mile in 54sec, after taking 13 2-ssec for the opening furlong, and did it well. Nebulous (H. T. Anderton) dashed home from the three furlongs in 39sec.

The Panair gelding has drawn the outside barrier position in the Trial Handicap and this will seriously prejudice his chance on Saturday. Panoli (J. D Pankhurst), Surhine (B. E. Kennedy), and Fox Powder (B. E. Kennedy) completed their work by coming home in 40sec.

The two-year-old Royaloil (J. Didham) and Dame Rumour (H. T. Anderton) were clear of King Gua (K. J. Schubert), in 39 2-ssec.

Honours (K J. Schubert) quail* fled as a hurdler and will take his place in the field for the Taieri Hurdles on Saturday. He was accompanied by his stablemate. Gay King (J. Didham). Both horses gave a good display in several runs over two flights of hurdles. The Trek (N. L. White) improved as he warmed up, giving a clean, fast performance over a round of four hurdles.
