KEY FIGURE AT TALKS

Press Comment On Makarios

(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 16. The arrival of Archbishop Makarios in London dominated the front pages of British newspapers today. Many published large pictures of the black-robed patriarch smiling and waving to crowds. The “Daily Mail” said in a leading article that the Archbishop was . the latest in "a pro-

cession of rebels” who had, in the end, found their way to the Commonwealth capital. "We think of De Valera. Gandhi, Nehru, Nkrumah, and others who have been imprisoned or exiled by British command. All subsequently came here for discussion and reconciliation. So it should be with Archbishop Makarios, or, let us say, with Cyprus,” said the "Daily Mail.” The “News Chronicle” said the Archbishop was a key figure in tomorrow’s conference. "He can help to make the nearmiracle real, or he can, with Byzantine subtleties, wreck it. This is the test.” The “Daily Herald” said: • “Be sure his arrival in London Is a bitter humiliation for those who supported the tragically stupid

Government policy of exile for Archbishop. Makarios and military toughness in Cyprus. They must swallow their pride. “The wild men and diehards cannot be allowed to ruin everything when a settlement is so near.” The “Manchester Guardian” said that an agreement on Cyprus should soon be reached, but added that there were some difficulties.
