The Waterfront

Sir.—A terrible tragedy was narrowly averted when the £ll million ship Golden Master was beached at Tauranga. Wonderful feats of engineering and seamanship released the ship from danger number one. While this was being done another tragedy was being arranged by the watersiders with the backing of Mr Walsh and no opposition from the Minister of Labour. A tremendous repair job, worth a huge sum in overseas exchange, would have been made, another Wanganella, for sure. The owners saw this and patched up the ship enough to escape from New Zealand to the Philippines just in time. Messrs Nash and Walsh and the Minister of Labour intend to diddle about next week while fruit and poultry and tourist cars go back and forth. Watersiders are asking for another showdown arid this Government is not game to meet it.—Yours, etc., E. K. BANFIELD. February 14, 1959.
