Psychiatric Services
Sir, —Many will welcome the Minister of Health’s statement that he believes that an outpatient service will ease the burden on our mental hospitals. Adequate outpatient and domiciliary services, plus day and night hospitals, are an urgent need. The shortage of psychiatrists and nurses, which he mentions, will not be solved until the service is made more attractive, and the remuneration more in line with that earned by other specialists. -Special training facilities should be available for psychiatric social workers, psychotherapists, clinical psychologists, and other ancillary workers, and post-graduate bursaries overseas for doctors. Improved care for the ■mentally ill must begin with improved conditions for those who care for them.—Yours, etc., DOUGLAS C. McKECHNIE. Geraldine, February 14, 1959.
