COMMERCIAL Prices Variable On Active Market

Trading was active on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday, with more than 5000 shares changing hands. Prices were variable. Dominion Breweries were in better trading when a parcel of 25 changed hands at 82s, 4s 6d firmer than the most recent sale of this stock in the city. Others to firm were Broken Hill Proprietary, Fletcher Holdings, and Griffins. The unlisted Matea Forests were also firmer. New Zealand Refrigerating were easier in four sa J. e ? 50 s 3d, and Woolworths and Australian Consolidated Industries were also weaker. C.F.C.A. contributing, New Zealand Insurance, G. J. Altered Exchange Rates The £ sterling gained over two cents in relation to the Canadian dollar last week, but lost oneeighth of a cent in relation to the United States dollar. Altered telegraphic transfer exchange rates, as advised yesterday by the Bank of New South Wales, are:— New Zealand on: New York: buying, 2.8038 dollars to £N.Z.I (compared with 2.8051 dollars on February 9); selling, 2.7720 dollars (2.7733). Montreal: 2.7508 dollars (2.7302); 2.7512 dollars (2.6948). . Austria: 72.93 schillings (72.94); 71.45 schillings (71.47). Sweden: 14.62 kroner (14.63); 14.28 kroner (14.29). PLEASANT POINT EWE FAIR '•The Press” Special Service TIMARU, February 6. At the Pleasant Point two-tooth ewe fair fully 18.000 Romney and Romney cross two-tooth ewes were varded, and. considering the prolonged dry spell South Canterbury has experienced, the sheep came forward for the most part in good condition and were well bred, with few tail end lots. The sale opened very quietly,, but had not progressed far before values for medium to good sheep jumped 10s to' 12s a head and were on that level for the remainder of the offering. The sale was followed by an unusually large gallery of farmers, whose keen competition was- more or less unexpected. Values were:— - Extra good ewes. 75s to 82s; good. 08s to 745; medium, 45s to 60a; small and inferior, 20a to 445.
