“EXTRAS” FOR BALLET
18 Christchurch Dancers
Twelve fortunate girls and six men in Christchurch are soon to have the rare honour of dancing with the Royal Ballet Company —formerly the Covent GardenSadler’s Wells Company. In every city where the company performs 18 “extras” or supernumerary dancers are recruited to dance with the touring company. They are chosen at an audition from pupils of ballet schools in the various centres. While the Royal Ballet Company is in New Zealand it will recruit 12 girls and six men from every town where it is to perform. Mr John Scarlett, the company’s advance manager, said in Christchurch yesterday that extra dancers would be interviewed in Christchurch shortly before the company’s first performance here on March 9. It was usually found, said Mr Scatlett, that hundreds of young women flocked to the auditions, but it was rather more difficult io find the number of male dancers required.
