PLANNING OF AIRPORT
City-Government Talks
A conference of local body 'and Government department representatives has been convened for Tuesday in Christchurch, to discuss the zoning of land in and around the Christchurch airport. Among those attending is expected to be the Director of Civil Aviation (Sir Arthur Nevill). - A decision in principle will probably be made On whether the airport manager-or an American consultant should be given the task of the airport’s ’’functional planning.' s The conferen- -' is considered by the City Council, which has been responsible for organising it, to be a preliminary meeting. It is possible that a committee will be set up to go further into zoning problems. One subject for consideration wilT be the zoning of an area between the airport and the city for industrial use. The Christchurch regional planning officer (Miss Nancy Northcroft) and the deputy-chairman of the regional planning authority (Mr E J, Bradshaw) will attend the conference to give their views.
Also present will be the regional superintendent of the Civil Aviation Administration (Mr P E. Hudson) and other senior officers of the administration, the airport manager (Mr A. I. R. Jamieson), the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast), the City Engineer (Mr E. Borners), the chairman of the City Council’s airport committee (Cr. A. R. Guthrey), and Waimairi and Paparua County Council representatives. Master Flan One of the foremost purposes of the conference will be to(protect the airport by a master zonir ’ plan designed to prevent encroachment on the aerodrome perimeter land. Also to be considered will be zoning within the airport for the location of engineering plant and equipment, the placement of freight depots and garaging services for vehicles using the airport, and other services and facilities. Another item on the agenda will be a proposal made last year by the American aviation consultant (Mr Leigh Fisher) for management, zoning, and functional planning of the airport. Mr Fisher may be re-engaged for this task if the airpert manager, who is considered to be qualified to do it, has not the time availablz from other duties for the task. Cr Guthrey said last evening that the conference would be in two sessions. The morning session would comprise discussions between the City Council, and Sir Arthur Nevill and his officers. The agenda for it was the major functional development of the airport, the Civil Aviation Administration’s requirements, the terminal building, Mr Fisher, airfield bylaws, parking and roading and aerial farming. The afternoon session would bring in the othei local body representatives and town planning advisers. The sphere of talks would be much wider and would include the airport in relation to land and zoning of the land itself.
