SWIMMING Coast Successes At N.Z. Junior Carnival

PALMERSTON NORTH, Feb. 13. Gaining the lead right from the start, the West Coast representative in the 56 yards junior boys* butterfly, M. Manderson, never appeared x in danger or losing Ms early lead and won easily from D. Gerrand (Auckland) in the first final during the second session of the national junior and 'lntermediate swimming championships in Palmerston North tonight. Manderson’s time of 30-lsec was a record—the only new time returned tonight. He also broke the record — held by Gerrand—in the heats this afternoon, when he recorded 30J2sec. Gerrand's time stood, at 30.4 sec. Miss Lynette Norman, tipped as a possible successor to Miss Philippa Gould, easily won the final of the 220 yards intermediate girls’ backstroke. Miss Norman; like ManderSon, took the lead, from the start, increased her lead with every length, and finished 6sec ahead of the second 'place-getter. Miss E. North (Southland L Much of Miss Norman’s lead could be attributed to her perfectly /executed tumble-turns, which hone of the other four swimmers could match. Exciting Finish The junior girls’ 100 yards backstroke brought the crowd to its feet as, for each of the six lengths of the pool, the five swimmers raced stroke for stroke, and the winner. Miss G. Brown (Otago), won only by a touch. Only l.lsec divided the first and last competitor. Miss Dl Nolan, West Coast’s second titlerwinner of the night, gained the narrowest of wins when she took the 220 yards intermediate girls’ freestyle race from Miss B. Nicholls (Auckland) otter leading all the way. C. Little (Southland) and G. Wakeley (Auckland) outclassed the intermediate boys’ 220 yards breaststroke field. Little only ,won by o.9sec.
