Garbage Men Reply
(Rec. 11 pm.) SYDNEY, January 22. All was quiet today at the home of a Newcastle Alderman, Mr Harry Edwards, who yesterday said th. garbage men employed by the local council, dressed in as little as possible, seldom shaved, and looked like a tribe of primitive nativesThen he had a caller. The caller wore fawn gabardine trousers, highly-polished brown shoes, a Sports shirt with a neatlyfastened red' cravat. Slightly bewildered, Mr Edwards watched as his visitor, without a word, walked around to the back of his house. There he delicately picked up the Edwards’s garbage can, emptied the contents into a municipal garbage truck, replaced the empty can and. with a courtly bow. drove off. Mr Edwards said later: “He looked so well, I tried to find a carnation for his buttonhole.” But he said he would continue his campaign to get Newcastle Council to provide white overalls for its garbage men. In Sydney, however, the, Lord Mayor (Aiderman Harry Jensen) appears to be in favour of the shorts-and-hairy-chest uniform- “ The sight of a manly physique is always welcomed by Sydney women.” he said.
