ROCKETS ON BEACH

Minister Orders

Inquiry

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Jan. 22.

The Minister of Marine (Mr Fox) has ordered an immediate inquiry into the finding of several dangerous ship’s rockets and flares on the beach at Sumner on Tuesday. The flares, which were condemned stores, are believed to have come from .the freighter Kaitoke, outward bound from Lyttelton to Sydney, The rockets were in a dangerous condition, and should have been broken out of their packing case and dumped singly over the side of the ship well out to sea. Instead, the case, marked “condemned rockets,” was dumped intact close to land and. was washed on to the beach. Mr Fox said tonight that he had asked the Secretary of Marine (Mr G. L O'Halloran) to inquire into the finding of the rockets and why they were not dumped well out to sea.
