UNIVERSITY SALARIES

Possible Review By Commission

(New Zeatana Press Assoerattonl PALMERSTON NTH., Jan. 22. “It is highly likely that a commission on the state of the New Zealand universities win be appointed, and it is to be hoped it will be non-political and headed by a person with the qualities and experience of Sir Keith Murray, the chairman of the United Kingdom Grants Committee,” said the Dominion president of the Association of University Teachers (Professor J, F. Northey) in Palmerston North today. He had been asked to comment on a statement today by Mr H. D. Black, a senior lecturer in economics and a Fellow of the Senate of the University of Sydney. Mr Black had said that Australian universities had attacked similar problems to those at present facing New Zealand universities. That had been made possible by the prompt adoption by the Commonwealth and State Governments of the Murray report, which was based oh a thorough investigation of an expert, non-political committee. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of New Zealand (Dr. G. A. Currie), questioned in Wellington last evening by “The Press,’’ said that when he had recently presented to the Minister of Education the representations of the Senate and councils of New Zealand universities that the universities should be considered by a commission separate from that proposed to review education generally, Mr Skoglund had informed him that such a course was now likely. The universities considered that no commission could adequately cover the diverse needs of primary, secondary, and university education. Dr. Currie said that if the Minister announced his intention to appoints separate commission on the universities, / the Senate would probably submit suggestions on the type of members such a commission should have.
