Neale Fraser, had to fight off a strong challenge by Don Candy In theh first of today’s quarter-finals in the Australian men’s singles tennis championship. Fraser 1 beat Candy, 6-2. 6-4, 4-6. 6-4. The South African girls, Misses Sandra Reynolds and Renee Schuurman, showed excellent form in comfortably winning their women’s doubles semi-final against the promising Sydney pair, Jan Lehane and Betty Holstein. They won 6-3, 8-2. The young Victorian, Bob Mark, in the men’s singles quarter-finals, defeated Andres Gimeno, of Spain. 6- 3-6, 7-5. 6-4. The young Spaniard had been favoured to win the title. Mark rattled Gimeno by fils fast, accurate returns of service and powerful volleying. The United States Davis Cup player, Alej Olmedo, in his quarterfinal against Ulf Schmidt (Sweden), used all his court craft to make up his weakness in service and volleying caused by strained stomach muscles. The match went to 56 games before Olmedo won, 6-4, 9-7, 3-8, 8-8, 7The fourth semi-final between Barry Mackay (United States) and Roy Emerson (Queensland) was postponed te tomorrow.
