HARVEST LABOUR FOR NELSON
Fewer Women This Year
(From' Our Own Reporter)
NEL3QN, January 22. •Two possible reasons have been advanced by ; Officers of the Department of Labour and Employ ment tor fqwer women offering this year for work in the Nelson harvests, of tobacco, hops and fruit.- One is lack of incentive for such types of work inherent in the P.A.Y.E. system, and the harder ’ taxation scales now operating in New Zealand. In addition, many people seem loath to leave their steady employment to take on seasonal work for a few months, fearing they may find it difficult to return to a steady off-season job Labour for the seasonal harvests in Nelson is recruited from all parts of New Zealand, with Departmental offices acting as recruiting centres for the Nelson office. Last year, of the 2600 workers placed in Nelson by the Department, two thirds were women. About 20 per cent of the seasonal labour force in Nelson is normally composed Of Maoris; in addition, a fair number of Australian girls come to New Zealand in the summer seeking employment on a working holiday. Elderly and unfit applicants are rejected.
