Peer Criticises Royal Tours
IN.Z Press Association— Copvrfofa) CARDIFF (Wales), Jan. 21.Lord Altrincham said in a Welsh commercial television programme last night that he did not think the Queen’s visits abroad should be a "travelling circus with the poor Queen never sleeping two consecutive nights in the same place.” Lord Altrincham said he wanted to make it clear that he had never attacked the monarchy. “I have only criticised certain aspects of the way in which the monarchy functions,” he said. UWhen I do that it doesn’t mean I attack the Queen in general. Far from it. “I wouldn’t bother to criticise if I did not think the monarchy was a most precious institution. “It is a serious departure from the national tradition of England, and quite unwholesome and undesirable to have a monarchy completely free from criticism. “When it was an absolute monarchy it was heavily criticised. Quite recently tradition has arisen that the monarchy is now a religion. This is thoroughly unwholesome,” he said.
