ROTORUA STATE FORESTS
Serious Fire Risk
(New Zealana -Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 22. Recent high temperatures and high winds had brought a serious fire risk to more than half a million acres of forest in the Rotorua conservancy, the conservator (Mr A. N. Sexton) reported today. Any fire would spread rapidly and would be extremely hard to control, he said. With more recent rain, forests in the Auckland area were not in such dire danger, said the Auckland conservator (Mr F. J. Perham) but danger readings 'were recorded at Maramaraua . and at Riverhead. “But the fire risk will increase substantially and suddenly if the present weather continues,” he said. At Rotorua, air patrols were being made daily as one precaution to insure against a fire break-out, said- Mr Sexton. A constant watch on the valuable forests was being kept from lookout stations. So far no serious fires have been reported, but Mr Sexton today warned the public that special care was needed.
