The British Prime Minister <Mr Macmillan) today told Labour questioners in Parliament that he personally would accept a conference with Russia on a narrower basis than that desired by the West if there was a._ prospect of extending its scope during the actual talks. He had been asked what initiative Britain would take for East-West summit talks. He was also pressed by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Gaitshell) to include a discussion of European security in any talks with Russia. Mr Macmillan told the Labour shadow Foreign Secretary (Mr Bevan) that he agreed with his endorsement of a recent statement by the United States Secretary of State (Mr Dulles) that free elections were not the only means of reunifying Germany. He' reaffirmed,, however, that Britain’s ', policy was the reunification ot Germany through tree elections, and freedom of choice for the resulting all-German Government to choose its own domestic and foreign policies.
