FIRE BURNS A LONG TIME

Water Pumped For Eight Hours

Water was still being pumped at 8.30 p.m. yesterday on a paddock used as a rubbish dump in Pound road, Islington, after an extensive fire had broken out in ; the area at 1 p.m. The property is owned by the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd. Grass in the paddock caught fire, and set an extensive area of ; rubbish alight. When the alarm was sounded at 1 -p.m., the company’s trailer pump and water tender were dispatched, and units from the Sockburn Fire Station and the Paparua County Council’s fire-fighting unit also arrived. Fire brigade units also spent some time fire-fighting at the factory property of Restar (5.1.) Ltd., in Blenheim road, yesterday. Waste resin spread out on the ground caught fire at 11.53 a.m. and a unit from the Sockburn station was called out. Hie fire was put out without great difficulty, but at 2.37 p.m. a Central station unit had to be called back when a grass fire broke out, caused possibly by an ember from the previous fire. Another grass fire on the Durham street property of Dalgety and Company, Ltd., was attended by a unit from the Central station at 12.53 p.m. Four More Fires Four other fires were attended in Christchurch suburbs during the day. The first was at 3.16 p,m. when a chimney caught fire at a house occupied by Mr R. F. McNabb, at 86 Colombo street, Sydenham. No damage was caused.

Another grass fire on a property at 2 Faraday street, Sydenham, which broke out at 6.3 p.m M was attended by a unit from the Sydenham station. It was put out without any damage to the house, which is occupied by Mr A. Lindeloff.

A further grass and scrub fire on the foreshore at South Brighton, near Beatty street, was attended by units from the Central and New Brighton stations at 6.34 p.m. The last call was at 8.4 p.m. to a fire in the Paparua County, Council’s rubbish dump in Springs road, Prebbleton. A unit from the Central station, and the Paparua County Council’s fire tender, were called out.
