RAIN IN NORTH CANTERBURY
Better Outlook For Farmers
Rangiora and other North Canterbury districts also experienced the sudden deluge at 9 p.m. during the thunderstorm. There was also a little light hail at Rangiora. but not sufficient to cause damage to Loburn fruit crops. At the height of the rainstorm at Rangiora traffic on the roads was forced to stop. One truck driver who continued his journey had to proceed no faster than 10 miles an hour. The Oxford area had heavy rain accompanied by thunder and vivid lightning in the hills. Rain fell in foothill areas northwards from Darfleld. It began about 8 p.m. Little or no rain fell at Waikari and places further north. West of Darfleld the storm broke early yesterday afternoon. An inch of rain was recorded in five hours. Akaroa and Banks Peninsula had steady rain from 8 p.m. Heavy rain also fell in Ashburton and the Mid-Canterbury area. Rain Welcome After patchy rain' over most of North Canterbury on Tuesday evening, last night’s rain will be welcomed by farmers, as a start towards alleviating the persistent drought.
The falls on Tuesday evening were not great, ranging from .80 in at Hawarden to .20in at Rangiora. Last night’s rain may mean a brighter outlook for farmers.
