HOSPITALITY TO WARSHIP

Arrangements For H.M.N.Z.S. Royalist The flagship of the Royal New Zealand Navy, the cruiser Royalist, will be open for public inspection at Lyttelton next Tuesday. The ship is due to berth at 8 a.m. that day for a visit lasting three days. Visitors will be permitted aboard the ship between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The captain of the Royalist (Captain C. G. Stevens) will make official calls in Christchurch and Lyttelton on Tuesday morning. Between 7.15 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. on Tuesday the Royalist will be inspected by a party from the Girls’ Nautical Training Corps, and volunteer reservists and Sea Cadets in uniform. Entertainment has been arranged for the ship’s company ashore the same night. A cocktail party will be held for the captain and his officers at 6 p.m. in H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus and this will be followed by a buffet supper party and informal dance at Elizabeth House, a function organised by the Middle Watch of the Navy League. A dance for 200 men of the ship’s company has been organised in Pegasus for the same evening. Sports Events A sports tournament has been arranged at Burnham Military Camp for Wednesday. There will be matches in cricket, golf, softball and water polo between teams of competitors representing the Royalist and the Southern Military District during the day and in the evening the Army will provide light entertainment for its naval visitors.

Military and civic leaders will be entertained at a luncheon aboard the Royalist on Wednesday. The luncheon will be tendered by Captain Stevens and his officers.

Two hundred guests, approximately, are expected to attend a cocktail party aboard the ship the same evening. On the morning of Thursday, January 2, Captain Stevens will pay an official call on the American Antarctic commander, RearAdmiral George Dufek, in Christchurch. Cricket, softball and water polo competitions will be held between the Royalist and Air Force teams at Wigram in the afternoon. At 8 pan. on Thursday the Royalist is scheduled to depart Lyttelton for Timaru.
