BOY WINS TALENT QUEST

Mother’s Performance

Repeated

Seven-year-old Paul Pickering, of Christchurch, won the children’s section of the talent quest at the Ngamotu Beach mardi gras, held in New Plymouth over the Nev.’ Year holiday. It was twenty years after his mother, Mrs A. Pickering, had won the same section at the first mardi gras. Paul, who sang to his own ukulele accompaniment, presented the same item as his mother, and used the same ukulele. The Pickerings, who moved to Christchurch from New Plymouth in 1951, are a very musical family. Paul’s father is a dance band leader, his mother sings with the band, his 10-year-old sister tap-dances, and his nine-year-old brother. Warren, plays the drums and sings. Another South Islander, Jeannette Hope of Timaru, aged 20. won the senior section with her novelty ventriloquist act.
