-It can be seen that this year's tournament at Nelson will be regarded as a stepping stone to that triangular contest and Canterbury will be represented by a strong contingent ( of players. Large entries have been received and many North Islanders will travel to Nelson. Ashley Heenan, of Wellington, will be a formidable competitor, holding the open championship, men’s championship, and the doubles title (partnered by Maurice Reckitt, of England) It will be the first national title meeting for the Canterbury open champion, F. W. Gurnsey (Fendalton), and by recent form he should win a title. He has twice won the South Island open title. Gurnsey is an excellent long roquet shot and an accurate break player. Another prominent Canterbury competitor will be Mrs W. H. Kirk (St. James’ Park), a former New Zealand women’s champion and New Zealand rep-1 resentative against England for the Macßobertson Shield in 1950 and 1956.
