CABINET OF U.S.S.R.
Only Woman Replaced
IN.Z Press Association—Copyright) MOSCOW, January 12. The Soviet Union’s only female Cabinet Minister '(Mn Maria Kovrigina), who led a campaign for a better deal, for Soviet women, has been released from her job as Minister of Health “irt connexion with her transfer to other work,” the Soviet Government announced tonight. She is replaced at the Ministry by Mr S. V. Kurashev, the former Minister of Health of the Russian Federation.
Mrs Kovrigina, who was appointed in 1954, campaigned tor fewer hours and less arduous work for Soviet women, who form a large part of the labour force.
In 1957 she appealed for the introduction in the Soviet Union of “effective, convenient and harmless” means of birth control to eliminate the need for abortions, which are legal there. The change appears to be part of a reshuffle before the 21st Communist Party congress at the end of this month.
