REPRIEVE FOR ELEPHANT
Petition From Children
<N Z Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) ROCHESTER (New York), January 12. Sally, a Rochester zoo elephant whieh killed her former keeper while he was in the cage with her last Thursday, is to be reprieved, city officials decided today. They had considered destroying her. The city will try to sell her to another zoo or a circus, where cages are built in sections. This permits the transfer of an animal to one. section while the other section is being cleaned. Sally’s cage is not built that way.
The zoo, closed since the accident, will reopen tomorrow. Attendants say Sally, still in the cage where the man's death occurred, has been giving no trouble. Her victim, Harold B. Cannon, aged 40, once was her attendant but she apparently had forgotten him. A petition signed by 172 children begged the city to save Sally because she “has been a good elephant for years."
