Captain Cook As Astronomer

Sir,—Your article concerning the basic facts of Captain Cook’s northern tour refers to the great explorer as a skilful astronomer. However, as the faithful diarist himself reports it was Mr Charles Green who was the expedition’s skilful astronomer. He had been sent by the Astronomer Royal to observe the transit of Venus and Mercury. That he did so is reported by Cook in his journal of the first voyage in the entry for March 31, 1770.—Yours, etc., ALL THE FACTS. January 13, 1959.
