Lawn Tennis INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT
Overseas Players To Compete
When the team of New South Wales junior boys and women tennis players visits Christchurch on February 21 the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association intends to hold an international tournament with the approval of the New Zealand association.
The four New South Wales boys and four women will be accompanied by the well-performed South Africans, Misses Benee Schuurmann and Sandra Reynolds, who have been playing in Australia for some time. It is intended that the fields will have eight in the men’s singles and eight in the women's singles, with first round, semifinals and final in each competition.
The women's field would be Misses Schuurmann and Reynolds (South Africa), Mrs M. Reitano, Misses J. Lehane, B. Holstein and N. Turner (New South Wales) and two Canterbury women, possibly out of Misses J. Davidson, G. Hopkinson and D. Norrie, on present performances. The men’s field would comprise the four New South Wales players, E. Stolle, M. Mulligan, R. Hewit and G. Pares, and four Canterbury players. At the end of the singles, doubles matches will be held.
Misses Schuurmann and Reynolds have done particularly well in Australian competition. Miss Schuurmann won the New South Wales women’s singles and Miss Reynolds the Victorian women’s singles title and they were runners-up in each of the New South Wales and Victorian women’s doubles. Miss Lehane was ranked fifth in Australia last April and Miss Holstein was ranked seventh. According to R. N. Howe, the recent winner of the New Zealand singles title, the two top players, Stolle and Mulligan, would be a match for any New Zealand player.
