Concern At Small Outbreaks

About four acres in each of the Waiharara and Houhora districts are affeetdd. - It «ia likely that,, there are, undiscovered patches between these places. This caterpillar. Is different from the ones seen in past years. It is black with unusual markings It is attacking elovers and cow peas. Its favourite food is maize, but at presen' It is to be seen in plague proportions tn pasture. The Waiharara outbreak is being sprayed and the Houhora area heavily grazed. The Awanui area seems clear. Caterpillars wintered well and an outbreak was expected this season, but so far, they have little more than nibbled at paspalum. The instructor in agriculture at Kaitaia (Mr H. G. Halliwell) has sent a crate of caterpillars to the Cawthron Institute at Nelson for positive identification and study.
