Earthquake At Cheviot An earthquake shock was felt at Cheviot at 10.23 p.m. yesterday but no damage was reported. It was described as a sharp jolt accompanied by a fair amount of noise. There were no following shocks. The shock was not felt in Waiau, Culverden or Amberley. First Amendment A casual remark by Mr Hiram Johnson, a member of a party of American farmers visiting Canterbury: “I don’t know why you say Canterbury Agricultural College! Why not just call it Lincoln—Abraham Lincoln—College.” Inter-Island Passengers The Hinemoa arrived at Lyttelton last evening after a daylight trip from Wellington with the largest number of passengers carried in the inter-island service for many years, 1480 Most of them were scouts returning from the jamboree at Auckland. Two trains were needed to take the passengers to Christchurch. The Maori left Lyttelton yesterday morning with 735 passengers, and the Hinemoa last evening with 910 passengers, for Wellington Stirling Moss’s Plans The champion British racing driver and winner of the New Zealand Grand Prix on Saturday, Stirling Moss, said in Auckland yesterday that he was very keen to return to New Zealand next year, and particularly interested in seeing the South Island. Moss’s wife is also keen to come to the South Island. Whether Moss would be seen in action at Wigram would depend upon financial arrangements reached between him and the Motor Racing Club. “Aukland” In Colour Passengers in the Mariposa, which called at Auckland on Saturday, could buy on board a series of colour transparencies of “Aukland.” Produced by a Californian firm, the “Aukland” series includes views of the Domain Wintergardens, labelled “Botanical Gardens,” and Ellerslie Racecourse, entitled simply “Track.” There are also slides of the Auckland Provincial War Memorial Museum, in full face as “Old State Building” and in profile as just “Edifice/’ Grapefruit Arrives A small consignment of grapefruit from Tauranga was available at the Christchurch produce markets yesterday. The fruit, which had been scarce because of a lack of shipping during the holidays, was in keen demand and realised high prices. Good supplies ojf most vegetables were available: Pumpkins from Nelson sold from lOd to Is per lb. Good quantities of locally-grown potatoes and marrows sold for 12s to 15s and up to 7s a case respectively. In the shops, potatoes sold for 6d and marrows for 8d per lb. Carrots, in good supply, made from 6s to 12s a case. Grand Prix Larks The four fledgling larks hatched beside the Grand Prix circuit at Ardmore during the practice last Thursday survived the meeting oh Saturday. Although their nest was in the grass only six feet from the speeding cars the young birds and their parents became used to the noise and fumes. One parent sat on the nest most of the race day while the other sought food. A track marshal heaped hay around the nest on Thursday and covered it with a piece of -cardboard so that marshals’ cars would not run over the larks.
