Miss Howard Attends Performance

After the Johnny Devlin show, which she attended last evening, the Minister of Social Welfare (Miss Mabel Howard) drove away with Devlin in a large pink convertible American car.

During the show, Miss Howard was welcomed by Johnny Devlin from the stage with “a very big hello for a very wonderful woman.” The spotlight flashed on her party, sitting in a box and Devlin swung into a number called “Straight Skirts I’—drowning 1 ’—drowning shouts of “able Mabel” from one small section of the crowd. “I’m really enjoying the show. There’s nothing much wrong with rock ’n’ roll,” said the Minister at half-time. “I promise Mabel Howard and all of you to write a number called “Christchurch Mock.” Devlin said to the audience at the end of the show. He announced that he would be back in Christchurch from January 29 to 31.

While they waited for him to appear, several hundreds of the audience packed around the car, under the watchful eye of five constables, two traffic officers, and half a dozen detectives.

When Miss Howard appeared, there was a terrific cheer, and Devlin was scarcely noticed until they were nearly in the car, when the sleeve of another of his £2O shirts was ripped off. They drove away with the car top rolled back, and Devlin’s head right down in Miss Howard’s arm for "protection.
