RETIREMENT OF H. B. CAVE

(New Zealand Press Association) ' WELLINGTON, January 12. Today was a sad farewell to firstclass cricket for H. B. Cave in the Plunket Shield match between Central Districts and Wellington at the Basin Reserve. Cave failed to score in his final innings, he took only one wicket, and his team, Central Districts. was beaten outright by seven wickets. Wellington players clustered around Cave when he came in to ,bat with the score seven for 104. ' and led by J. R. Reid, gave the Central Districts captain three hearty cheers. Possibly the demonstration affected Cave, for shortly after, without having scored, he tried to pull a ball from the slow left-arm spinner, L. C. Butler, missed, and was bowled. After Wellington had scored 35 runs in 17 minutes to win the match outright. Cave was given generous applause from the spectators when he led his side off the field for the last time.
