FLAGS OF NATIONS PARTICIPATING

Supply Inadequate (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, January 12.

When Palmerston North appealed to the Ministry of Works for assistance in supplying the flags of the various Commonwealth countries represented at the Commonwealth Relations Conference which opened here today. It was found the New Zealand Government had'only six flags of the 14 nations participating.

The Ministry of Works promptly arranged for the missing flags to be dispatched from London, but only one of each , was obtained. The Palmerston North public .relations officer (Mr M. R. Jensen) had hoped to. have the Opera House, the venue of the opening session of the conference, bedecked with the flags of all the participating nations, and also that the hotels where delgates are staying should fly the flags of the nations concerned. Because only one flag was available in most cases, Mr Jensen and his staff had to do a hurried job of removal after the conference Opening, the flags being taken from the' Oper< House in heavy rain and transferred to the various hotels.
