NEWMARKET’S WIN IN TRIAL PLATE

(From Our Own Reporter)

DUNEDIN, January 1. Newmarket made a successful debut for his Riccarton ownertrainer, Mr' J. s. Shaw, in the Trial Plate at Waikouaiti today. Newmarket, a three-year-old gelding by Treasure Hunt from Indulgence, ran into a trailing position early in the race. He followed London Tower round to the straight, drifted towards the middle of the track on the home turn, but kept up a solid run when balanced, and won running away by two lengths and a half from Colette. Colette was alongside Newmarket from the home turn to the furlong. rhe Oamaru-trained favourite beat Gambol by a length for second, the latter getting up in the last few strides to peg back London Tower. Gladwyn was a neck back fifth, three lengths clear of Bantasta. Golden Voice lost his chance at the start. Favourite Wins Brown Watch took his holiday record to three wins in as many starts when he ran away from the others in the Bray Hack Handicap, for which he was favourite. Mr R. C. McKenzie’s three-year-old, Timanova gelding ran easily about three places back lor about five furlongs, ran up quickly to follow Summer’s End round the home turn, and cleared out in the last furlong and a half. At the end he was going away four and a half lengths clear of the Riccarton filly Tauntress. which had her chance. Tauntress was in a trailing position -behind Summer's End and Arrow Royal to the half-mile, then moved forward one position when Summer’s End went clear. She had trailed alongside Vailima and beat that Wingatui foUr-year-old at her leisure by three and a half lengths. Vailima was half a length clear of Arc Flight, which put in a big run under a vigorous ride from the half-mile. The weakening Summer’s End was two lengths back fifth. Domain Plate Erin’s Isle, which was placed at Washdyke on Monday, won the Domain Plate in sound style after making all the running. Bonnie Star was alongside him in the lead coming to the straight, but dropped out quickly, and Erin’s Isle was not really put to the test to beat Royal Regent by a length and a half.

Royal Regent was about four places back to the straight and passed the weakening Strath Maris to reach second position inside the furlong. Royal Regent beat the fasterfinishing Abou Ben Adhem by half a length for second, but the others, led home by Mirene, were beaten off

Strath Maris weakened to fifth a length behind Mirene.

High-weight to Sizzler Sizzler, a winner against the hack stayers on Dunedin Cup day, fought off a persistent and sustained challenge from Marsana in the Comaga High-weight, winning by half a head. Sizzler ran up to Skylight in the lead going to the five furlongs and Marsana joined him a furlong later. Skylight then dropped behind a length or so. : Sizzler and Marsana came to the straight on terms, and worked beyond challenging range of the others going to the furlong. The result could have gone either way, but it went against Marsana, which is having an unsuccessful battle to improve on minor placings. Skylight was a -fair third two and a half lengths back. Then there was a length and a half to the top-weight Bon Soir, which felt his weight of 11-2 a good way from home and ran past weary horses in the last halfmile. Native King was the best of the others.

Royal George Wins The light-weights, Royal George and The Rector, had the finish of the Hawkesbury Hack. Handicap very much to themselves at the end. Royal George gave The Rector, which was pacemaking, two lengths start on the home turn, and mastered him close to home, winning by half a length. This was Royal George’s first win and gave the Orari apprentice, S. B. Laming, his second win for the day. Royal George, like Erin’s Isle, which had won earlier under Laming’s handling, is trained by T. Reilly. He was five lengths from The Rector, but easily outstayed Serang. The win favourite Riverwood put in a big run from the tail of the field for third, but the leaders had got too far away from him. He was five lengths from The Hunted Gets Up Fisticuffs, a stablemate of Royal George, was inches from victory in the Orbell Hack Handicap, the second leg of the on-course double. She was mastered close to home by the Riccarton hack Hunted, which gave Mr J. B. Douglas-Clifford's team its only win on the Otago holiday circuit.

Bon Salut and Captain Hunt disputed the lead around to the straight, and Fisticuffs and Hunted followed them. Captain Hunt lost his lead near the furlong. Hunted and Fisticuffs pulling out to have the finish to themselves. Hunted finished generously under vigorous handling from G. W. Mein and beat the Orari mare by a short head. Captain Hunt was two and a half lengths back third and then there was a length and a quarter to the weakening Bon Salut. Befana and Ocean Melody were the best of the others.

The favourite. Rayspar, did not accelerate as quickly as most of the others. He was tailing the bunch when he fell about a furlong and a quarter after the start. .
