INVERCARGILL DOUBLE

Canon For First Leg

“The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL, January 1. The fields on the opening of the Southland Racing Club’s cup meeting tomorrow may be reduced a good deal by scratchings and an early forecast is not easy at this stage. Montrose has been withdrawn from the Invercargill Gold Cup. Water Boy and Cornflake also hold alternative engagements and may be missing. Both King’s Lace and Montrose have been scratched from the Waihopai Handicap, and Arabian Chief is to run in the Gold Cup, in preference to the Avenal Hurdles. Irre- , pressible will not start in the Three-year-ol<f Handicap. Tadpole will have a chance to win his sixth race on end in the Avenal Hurdles if he takes his place in the field. The Hazlett stable has two other representatives in Bonnie Strathyre and Brig o’ Cally in this race. The T.A.B. double will be on the Invercargill Cup and the Waikiwi Handicap. There has been rain tonight, but it has not affected the track. If there is no serious break in the weather overnight the going will be hard and fast.
