CHANGES OF REGISTRY

Greek-Owned Ships (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) ATHENS, Dec. 18. More than 500,000 tons of Greek-owned merchant shipping, formerly registered under flags of convenience, have been changed to Greek registry, a Merchant Marine Ministry spokesman announced. He denied reports that the changes were taking place because Greece planned to impose heavy taxes on other-than-Greek flag ships, the American Associated Press said. Greece, he said, was trying to create such favourable economic conditions and terms of exploitation of Greek merchantmen as would make the Greek flag attractive, and place Greek merchantmen on a competitive basis in the international shipping field.
