GOOD SUPPLY OF WATER
Horotane Valley System
Residents in the upper levels of the Horotane Valley have now got a good supply of water, with no detrimental effects to consumers lower down the valley. A meeting of the Heathcote County Council was told by the county inspector (Mr E. F. Johnson) last night. A booster pump was fitted into the Horotane pipe line just below the bridge near the upper end on December 1, said the report. The pump has been running continuously since it had been installed, but there are still minor adjustments to be made.
There still remained a low pressure area in Flinders road, where the two top houses were sometimes short of water. The only way the supply could be improved during day periods was by bringing in extra water through the by-pass, and this method was now difficult to operate.
More trouble had been experienced with the sewer main in Opawa road, and the Drainage Board was repairing another length of sewer main in Brabourne street, said the report. On December 11, while preparing for testing, trouble was experienced with the rising main and a blow-out of a joint at the outlet end of the Rees pump occurred. Both motors were in danger of being put out of action, but they were covered in time and the spurting water was stopped before any further damage was done. Final repairs were made next day when it was found that a faulty ball hydrant and a faulty valve were the cause of the trouble.
